Which VR Headset Should You Buy? It Depends (I Learned This the Hard Way)

One thing I learned the hard way: the G2's controllers are decent, but not great for hand-tracking-heavy tasks. But here's where I messed up: I ordered 15 Quest 3 units assuming they'd work flawlessly with our SteamVR-based training content via Link cable. They do—mostly. But not all content is optimized for Qualcomm chips vs. PC GPUs. We had to re-author two modules because the physics simulation lagged on standalone mode. The lesson: test your specific software on the exact headset model before scaling up.

To be fair, Meta's enterprise management tools (work accounts, MDM integration) have improved significantly since 2023. If you're managing 50+ headsets, the admin overhead is noticeably lower than with consumer accounts.

My recommendation: Don't buy a headset yet. Seriously. Rent or borrow first.

I know this sounds counterintuitive for a tech procurement guide, but I've seen too many teams buy $1,000+ headsets that sit unused because the content wasn't ready or the team wasn't trained.   • You're unsure if VR will stick, or you have a small team? → Scenario C. Rent first. Validate. Then buy.
  • Everything else? → Probably Scenario C. Don't let FOMO push you into a $5k+ investment without proof.

One more thing I wish someone told me: don't obsess over the headset spec sheet alone. I did that in 2021—compared resolution, FOV, refresh rates across 12 models, and picked one.
