The Headset Trap: What HP Reverb G2, Bose A30, and Jabra Taught Me About Buying VR

That One Request That Made Me Stop

It started with two words from our sales director: “We need VR.” No model, no link, no budget. Just VR.

I don’t have a magic product to recommend. I do not trust product pages alone anymore. What I have is a checklist I now use for every “headset” request. It’s short (five questions), and it has saved me more than once.

  1. What is it connecting to? A PC, a laptop, an airplane intercom, or a phone? This is the first question because it rules out half the field.
  2. Is it standalone or tethered? If the user expects to move around without a computer, that’s one category. If they need PC-level graphics, that’s another.
  3. Who sets it up? If the answer is “the same person using it,” simplicity matters more than peak performance.
  4. Does the seller support the setup? For the HP Reverb G2, I’d want the latest compatibility list and a return policy that covers mismatched drivers.
  5. What does the client see or hear first? This is where I’ve learned to spend the extra dollars, not on brand name, but on the experience.

The HP Reverb G2 VR headset setup took us about 45 minutes once we had the right PC. The Jabra laptop connection took two minutes via Bluetooth and three with the dongle. The Bose A30 worked exactly as intended the first time we powered it up. The difference wasn’t luck. It was asking the right questions before placing the order.

So glad I eventually wrote this checklist. Almost kept “winging it,” which would have meant another demo disaster and another awkward conversation with finance. Dodged a bullet.
