The HP Reverb G2 core specification is strong for a PCVR headset:

- Tracking: Inside-out camera tracking, no base stations
- Audio: Integrated off-ear speakers and a 3.5mm jack
- Connection: DisplayPort and USB to a Windows PC
- Platform: PCVR, using Windows Mixed Reality and SteamVR
Valve Index headline specs are 1440 x 1600 per eye, refresh rates up to 144Hz, and base-station external tracking. Both headsets have good integrated audio. Both are PCVR headsets, not standalone devices.
The G2 vs Index comparison that made me change my checklist
1. Clarity vs refresh rate
The G2 has roughly 4.7 million pixels per eye. The Index has roughly 2.3 million per eye. In practice, that pixel count shows up as readable text and cleaner fine detail. When I run procedural safety training with checklists, the G2 makes a real difference. Users stop leaning toward the panel and can read labels at normal distances.
The surprise was refresh rate. I thought 90Hz would feel dated after I had used an Index running at 120Hz. In actual controlled experiences, most visitors did not mention stutter or smoothness. The content was not fast enough for the refresh advantage to matter. For racing, first-person sports, or any high-speed simulation, the Index 144Hz advantage becomes real. The conclusion is not that refresh is irrelevant. The conclusion is that a high refresh rate only matters when your content, GPU, and frame pacing can actually use it.
2. Tracking vs setup complexity
The Valve Index uses base stations, and the tracking is excellent. It is less likely to lose controller positions. If I were building a room-scale arena, that would be my default choice.
The G2 uses inside-out tracking. That sounds less precise, and in some situations it is. But for my fixed bays and seated or standing simulators, the G2 tracking is more than adequate. More importantly, it lowers setup cost. There are no base stations to mount, align, test, or protect. That saved hours whenever we changed room layouts or moved equipment between locations.
My most expensive tracking mistake came from saying 'we need reliable tracking' without saying 'for seated and standing stations.' The result was a lighthouse-based system that was technically superior, but also more expensive, more complicated, and not necessary for the workflow. 3. Audio and the 'headset' wording trap
Both the Reverb G2 and the Index use off-ear speaker designs. This is a big advantage in a multi-user environment because the speakers do not press into ears and they do not absorb sweat the way over-ear gaming headsets do. I would not buy an over-ear audio headset just to improve VR audio.
The word 'headset' causes repeated purchasing mistakes. An HP Reverb G2 is a VR headset. A Jabra headset is usually a Bluetooth audio headset. A Razer Gengar headset is a different audio product, not a VR display. If your team sends a request that says 'headsets,' clarify whether they mean VR displays or audio only. I once had accounting add a Jabra headset to a VR station request because the line item did not say 'virtual reality.' Choose Valve Index if you need room-scale experiences, high refresh rates in fast content, and the most reliable external tracking you can justify. The extra setup work becomes acceptable when tracking confidence is part of the product you sell.
Before buying any used Reverb G2 in 2025, check current Windows Mixed Reality compatibility and the replacement-parts market. I would rather cancel an order than repeat my earlier mistake of saving on the unit and then losing the budget on support.
This guide is not an excuse to avoid picking a side. For our facility, the decision is based on the room and the use case.
