What has changed in 2025, and what has stayed the same
In my role coordinating VR hardware for an indoor entertainment company, I'm the person who gets called when headsets have to work by a specific hour. Over the past three years, I've deployed more than 30 HP Reverb G2 headsets across escape rooms, pop-up arcades, and corporate events. A good number of those were rush jobs—the equipment showed up on Tuesday and the first paid group was booked for Thursday.
Before we start: this article is about the HP Reverb virtual reality headset, specifically the G2 model. If you're here because you were trying to figure out how to connect a Jabra headset to a laptop, or you're comparing the latest Corsair gaming headset for conference calls, this page isn't what you need. The Reverb G2 is a wired VR headset that runs from a PC with a dedicated graphics card. It is not a Bluetooth audio headset.
The setup process below is what we actually run through on site. It works for one headset in a home office and for six headsets in a commercial VR escape room. Follow the checklist in order and you won't have to revisit earlier steps.

People still assume that a high-end VR headset means external base stations. That belief comes from the early room-scale VR era, when you had to mount external sensors on walls, run power to them, and keep a clean line of sight between them and the headset. The Reverb G2 does not work that way. Four cameras on the headset handle inside-out tracking, so there are no base stations to install.
What the old advice gets wrong is the implication that the headset is the whole setup. The G2 depends on Windows Mixed Reality, and WMR depends on an updated PC. When someone tells me a VR headset is plug-and-play, that's the moment I expect the setup to take twice as long.
Inside-out tracking removed the base stations. It did not remove the PC from the equation.

Step 1. Update Windows and the GPU driver before unboxing
The Reverb G2 runs through Windows Mixed Reality, which is picky about Windows versions and GPU drivers. Start every PC with a full Windows Update, reboot, then install the current graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD. Do not rely on the driver the machine shipped with. In November 2024, I went to a venue whose PC had never had a GPU driver update. Mixed Reality Portal froze every time. One driver update and a reboot fixed it. This is the most boring step in this article, and the one we never skip.
Step 2. Install the software before connecting anything
Open the Microsoft Store and install or update Mixed Reality Portal. If you'll use SteamVR content, install Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR from Steam as well. Do this before you connect the headset. When people connect first, Windows sometimes installs a generic driver, and later SteamVR reports 'headset not detected.' (Should mention that Mixed Reality Portal can download a large update on first launch, so it's better to do this while the headset is still in the box.)
Step 3. Connect the tether to the right ports
The G2 tethers to the PC with a USB connection and a DisplayPort connection. Use a USB 3.x port directly on the computer, and use a DisplayPort on your discrete graphics card. Avoid USB hubs and docking stations. If you're using a laptop, make sure the port you choose is wired to the dedicated GPU, not just to integrated graphics. The most common 'no signal' issue on a G2 is not a broken headset; it's a cable connected to the wrong place.
Step 4. Let the headset finish its first-run setup
The first time you plug in, Windows Mixed Reality takes over. It sets up the headset, pairs controllers, and may update firmware. This routine can take 10 to 20 minutes. Let it finish. I understand the urge to click through and start playing, but a half-configured headset creates problems that look like tracking issues until you rerun the full setup.
Step 5. Choose room-scale and draw the boundary carefully
When the portal asks what kind of experience you want, choose room-scale, not seated. The boundary system needs to know the floor and the walking area. Walk the full perimeter while tracing the boundary. Keep the boundary about a foot away from physical walls, chairs, and prop tables, so the virtual wall appears before players touch anything real.
Step 6. Put a physical marker in the center of the play area
Place a mat or a piece of tape in the center of the playspace. The G2 does not use external beacons, so it builds its map from what its cameras see. If the room's lighting changes or large props are moved, that map can shift. A physical home point makes it easy for staff to reset players and gives everyone a consistent orientation during each session.
Step 7. Load SteamVR and route the audio
Open SteamVR and check the basics before you launch any content. SteamVR should list the headset as active and controllers should appear. In SteamVR settings, set the audio output to the HP Reverb G2. The built-in off-ear speakers are good enough for most escape rooms; if you need extra isolation, use the 3.5 mm jack on the headset. Don't put another over-ear gaming headset on top of the Reverb—it presses on the sidearms and makes long sessions uncomfortable.
Step 8. Plan the cable before players turn around
Cable management is not an afterthought. The Reverb G2's tether is long enough for room-scale movement, but players turn around, kneel, and reach. A cable on the floor will eventually be stepped on, pulled, or wrapped around a player. Hang the cable from an overhead pulley or run it through ceiling anchors in a full-motion room. Then rehearse the game with a staff member and watch where the cable goes. Serious damage to the connection point is usually a cable-management problem first.
Step 9. Do a full rehearsal before doors open
Run a full session before the first paying group arrives. I mean the actual game, in the actual room, with the actual lighting. Walk through the whole experience: boundary appears in the right spot, controllers are charged, audio routes to the headset, and the PC doesn't drop tracking mid-way. In a venue, make this a daily pre-open check. A fifteen-minute rehearsal is cheaper than refunding a group.
Three mistakes that show up after day one
1. You tested during the day, but the room runs at night
The G2's cameras use visible light. If the venue has black walls or a single flickering LED strip, tracking can drift. Check the room at night with all game lighting on before you finalize. We add posters or contrast tape to blank walls, and we replace low-quality LED strips that strobe at a frequency the cameras catch.
2. 'Setup is done' means different things to different people
Once, I told a venue manager we'd be 'set up by 1.' What I meant was hardware ready with drivers and software installed. What he heard was 'games are playable and staff can start at 1.' The group was booked for 2 and we hadn't finished sound routing. We got it done, but only just. Now 'done' means the game is loaded, audio is correct, boundary is tested, and a staff member has done a full run.
3. You don't rerun setup after the room changes
Escape room set designers move props. Clients add furniture. If the cameras see a meaningfully different room, WMR may ask you to run the environment setup again. Don't ignore the request. Retrace the boundary whenever large objects are added or removed. It saves 30 minutes of troubleshooting before each session.
What has changed in 2025, and what has stayed the same
The Reverb G2 is no longer a new product. HP ended production of the Reverb line in 2023 (Source: HP Newsroom), and Microsoft has placed Windows Mixed Reality on its Windows deprecation list (Source: Microsoft Learn, 2024). I mention this because if you're building a new VR arcade from scratch, you should make an informed decision. If you already own Reverb G2s, the situation is different: a maintained G2 can still run solid VR sessions for years. The risk is support and spare parts, not suddenly becoming useless.
I spent some time second-guessing our G2 recommendation for a venue after that news. In practice, the headset was rarely the weak point. The weak points were the things this checklist covers: outdated drivers, poor cable layout, lighting, and staff who never got a clear definition of ready.
There is also a business calculation. If your room sells by the session—which is how most escape room prices work—the cost of a broken setup isn't just the replacement part. It's the lost time slot. A headset issue that kills the Saturday 11:00 game doesn't come back as overtime revenue. Treat the daily setup check as part of the product, not as optional maintenance.
What was best practice in 2020, wall-mounted sensors and planning one room per day, is not what a modern setup requires. The fundamentals haven't changed: controlled lighting, a defined boundary, a managed cable, and a maintained PC. The execution has. Set the G2 up in the right order, test it in real conditions, and it will still deliver a clean VR experience.
