Hands up: I don’t do “best headset” lists anymore. Not because they’re useless, but because they’re incomplete. The HP Reverb G2 is a genuinely sharp PCVR headset. It’s also the wrong headset for a lot of people. Both of those things can be true.
I’ve been handling VR hardware orders for training programs for four years. In that time, I’ve personally made—and documented—eleven significant mistakes, totaling roughly $18,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team’s checklist so other people don’t repeat my errors. This post is part of that checklist.

Here’s the thing: the right answer depends on your situation. There is no universal “buy this” recommendation. The HP VR Reverb G2—usually just called the Reverb G2—is no longer in production, so you’ll mostly see refurbished or new-old-stock units. That doesn’t make it a bad buy. It makes the decision more about your situation.
The Three Scenarios for a VR Headset Purchase
I split every buyer into three groups. You fit into one of them.
Scenario A: You have a powerful PC and you want native PCVR without compression
If you’re running a desktop with a GPU in the RTX 3060 Ti / RX 6700 XT class or better, and you’re okay with a cable, the HP Reverb G2 still makes sense in 2026. The 2160×2160 per-eye resolution is not the newest number in VR, but it’s still a lot of pixels. More important: it’s a native PCVR headset. No video compression, no battery anxiety, no wireless stream to babysit.
The catch? Your PC needs a DisplayPort output and a USB 3.0 port that Windows Mixed Reality accepts. That is not optional. I once built a quote around seven Reverb G2s without checking the GPU outputs. The GPUs had one DisplayPort and two HDMI. We spent $900 on adapters that still caused weird disconnects. Period.
Check the Windows Mixed Reality compatibility tool before you buy. If your PC doesn’t pass, the Reverb G2 is not the right PCVR headset for you, no matter how good the specs look.
What most people don’t realize is that HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapters often don’t work for this headset. The bandwidth requirements are too high. “VR-ready” usually means “has the right outputs,” not just “has a fast GPU.”
Scenario B: You’re buying for work, training, or an event with a deadline
If this is for a training day, a client demo, a conference booth, or a class, the calculation changes. The difference between a $550 headset from a slow seller and a $650 headset with a guaranteed delivery date is not $100. It’s the price of your event.
In March 2024, I paid $120 extra for expedited delivery on a replacement Reverb G2 cable. The cheaper listing said “estimated 2 weeks.” Our training course started in 12 days. The expedited cable arrived in 4. I hesitated for an hour because $120 sounded like a lot. Then I did the math: $120 vs $14,000. I ordered the expedited cable. If you have a deadline, you’re not buying speed. You’re buying certainty. That’s worth a premium.
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: a “standard” delivery estimate often includes buffer time. It’s not necessarily how long your order will take; it’s how much flexibility the warehouse wants. When you need a date, ask for a guaranteed ship date. If the first vendor won’t commit, try the next one.
This is the same logic I use with print jobs: a vendor who explicitly guarantees a turnaround is different from one who says “probably by then.” Guaranteed is worth the extra money when missing the deadline is costly.
Scenario C: You just want to play VR without a PC
This is the advice most people don’t want to hear: if you don’t already have a VR-ready PC, don’t buy the HP Reverb G2. Buy a standalone headset like the Meta Quest 3 instead. It’s easier, it works in a living room, and it doesn’t need a DisplayPort cable running across the floor.
I say this with respect for the Reverb G2. But the setup friction is real. Wired PCVR means you’ll go through Windows Mixed Reality, then SteamVR, then the game. That’s an extra layer of things that can break. For a casual gamer, that friction is enough to send the headset back to the box. Simple.
Also, if your GPU is mid-range, a high-resolution PCVR headset can hurt more than help. You’ll end up lowering the render resolution to get smooth frames, which makes the “sharp image” advantage pointless. A lower-resolution headset with a stable frame rate is better than a 4K panel running at 70% resolution.
How to Connect a Razer Headset to PC for VR
You might not need to replace the Reverb G2’s audio at all. The built-in speakers and mic are decent. But if you already own a Razer gaming headset and you want better voice quality, or you’re using a different PCVR headset, here’s the workflow.
Step 1: Connect the Razer headset to your PC
- USB Razer headset: Plug the USB dongle or cable into a USB port. Wait for Windows to detect the device.
- 3.5mm Razer headset: Plug it into the PC’s combo audio jack. If your PC has separate mic and headphone jacks, use a splitter.
- Wireless Razer headset: Use the 2.4GHz dongle, not Bluetooth. Bluetooth adds latency and can cause crackling in VR.
Step 2: Set your Razer as the default audio device
Right-click the speaker icon in Windows and choose Sound settings. Under Output, select your Razer device. Under Input, select the Razer microphone. If you want the Reverb G2 to handle game sound and the Razer to handle chat, open the legacy Sound Control Panel and set the Razer as the Default Communication Device.
Step 3: Tell SteamVR which device to use
Open SteamVR → Settings → Audio. For “VR Audio,” choose the Reverb G2’s earphones (or the Razer if you’re wearing it). For “Communications Audio,” choose the Razer device. This way Discord, Teams, or in-game voice uses the Razer mic while game audio stays in the headset.
Quick tip: if your teammates can’t hear you in VR, it’s usually because the VR app selected the Reverb G2’s mic. Change the communications device in SteamVR settings to your Razer input.
Dodged a bullet when I tested this before a session. The remote instructor could have heard every fan spin in the room. Not exactly professional.
How to Figure Out Which Scenario You’re In
If you’re still unsure, answer these four questions:
- Does my PC have a VR-capable GPU and the right video outputs?
- Am I okay with a cable and the Windows Mixed Reality software?
- What is the actual cost of missing my deadline?
- Will I play mostly native PCVR games, or do I just want to pick up a headset and play?
If you answered “yes” to 1 and 2, and “high” to 3, the HP Reverb G2 is worth serious consideration. If you answered “no” to 1 or 2, buy a standalone headset. If you answered “no” to 2 but you still want the Reverb’s resolution, I’d challenge that expectation: you’ll regret the cable more than you’ll enjoy the pixels.
Looking back, I should have bought an extended warranty on our first batch of Reverb G2s. At the time, it felt like a upsell. Then two cables needed replacement in the same quarter. If I could redo that decision, I’d spend the extra 8% upfront. But given what I knew then—a reliable product with occasional cable issues—it was a reasonable pass.
Final round: there is no perfect headset. There’s only the right one for your situation. The Reverb G2 was the right call for our training labs. It might be for you. Or it might be a very expensive mistake. Decide based on your scene, not on the spec sheet.
