HP Reverb G2 for SteamVR vs. Wireless VR Headsets: A Business Buyer's Honest Comparison

Impressive numbers, but the number that's not on the spec sheet is the compression that kicks in when you run PC VR content. The image gets compressed, sent over a cable or Wi-Fi, and decompressed inside the headset. That's where fine detail starts to soften.

We found this out with text. In one of our training modules, there's a part number on screen that's uncomfortably small. In Q3 2024, I ran a side-by-side test on the same PC: Reverb G2 on one station, wireless headset on the other, same content, same user. The G2 rendered it clean. Getting a wireless headset to SteamVR is a longer chain. You need the Meta Quest software, a Meta account, and either a Link cable or Air Link, or a third-party tool like Virtual Desktop. Every layer is a thing that can silently break.

I do not need extra layers when a client is in the room.

January 2024. Corporate group booked at 10AM. At 9:30, I let the Meta software update on one station because it had been nagging us for days. The Air Link pairing reset itself, thirty minutes before the event. We moved the session to a wired station and started eleven minutes late.

The client was patient. The event went okay. But I remember standing in the control room thinking: we almost lost a $4,000 booking because of a software update. The headset was fine. The chain around it wasn't.

The wired setup cost us $300 once for cable mounts. Replacement cables are cheap. We don't think about it anymore.

A separate trap: the lowest quote isn't always the cheapest one. In 2022, we tested a new reseller because their price on three headsets was $160 lower than our usual supplier. 5. Quick answer: what is the best headset for PS5?

I get this one a lot, from staff and clients. Half the time it's actually two different questions.

If you mean VR for the PS5, the platform-native answer is the PlayStation VR2—a 2000×2040 per-eye OLED headset (Source: playstation.com). It's a solid piece of hardware, but it runs PS5 content, not SteamVR. You can't connect it to a PC-based VR station and get your existing Steam library running. If your operation is PC-based, PSVR2 is a separate ecosystem, not an upgrade path.

If you mean an audio headset for PS5, that's a completely different purchase. That's the SteelSeries Arctis and Pulse Elite territory—good products, but they have nothing in common with a VR headset except the word “headset.” I've seen purchase requests mix those up. The result is always the same: someone gets a very nice pair of headphones and no way to run VR.

My standard answer is: “Which platform, and which job?” Because a PS5 audio headset bought for a PC VR station—or a VR headset bought when you only needed team chat—is exactly the kind of error that shows up in monthly reconciliation.

6. Which one should you buy?

Let's make it practical, because “it depends” is a useless answer on its own.

Buy the HP Reverb G2 if:

You run dedicated PC stations with SteamVR content. The native SteamVR support and uncompressed image make it the lowest-friction option.

You do client demos and events where reliability is the whole point. Wired means no battery, no dropped link, no firmware surprises.

You have staff who need to set it up quickly. The setup is genuinely simple.

Choose a wireless headset if:

Your space needs untethered, room-scale movement. A cable will kill the experience.

You don't have PCs for each station and need standalone operation. Wireless solves that problem cleanly.

You're building a consumer-style setup where occasional glitches are a minor annoyance, not a business risk.

Pick the PSVR2 if:

Your platform is PS5, full stop, and you don't plan to move to PC-based VR.

The premium for certainty—the wire, the expedited shipping, the known vendor—is the easiest line on any quote to justify. You only pay it once. The alternative: you pay every time it fails.

For us, the choice came down to what kind of failure we could live with. Wireless marketing says “freedom.” Operations asks “what happens when it stops working?” The Reverb G2 doesn't stop. Not because it's magic—because there's less to go wrong. A wire is a simple thing. Simple things fail less.

After five years of buying this gear, I can tell you this: the HP Reverb G2 is the virtual reality headset that our entire SteamVR-based training program runs on. And the reason isn't the resolution or the brand. It's that it shows up on time, works when it needs to, and doesn't fail at 2PM on demo day. We stopped paying for uncertainty in February 2024.
